Tona is a transsexual inmate at the Quatre Camins jail for men. In light of her sexual situation, she has asked to be moved to a women’s jail and complains of constant “pestering, insults and abuse” even though she sleeps apart from the rest of the inmates.
However, she will only be allowed to move when her identity card has been changed to show her gender as female.
“We could say that it a bureaucratic issue,” explained Natalia Pares, who is the president of the Catalu?a Transsexual Collective.
For her part, Tona has already asked for her identity card to be changed, and has explained that she has been taking hormone treatment since she was sixteen years old, and that this has been supervised for the last six years by prison medical staff, which, she claims, is “clear evidence” of her real gender.
