Tranny role a surprise

FAMKE Janssen, star of controversial TV show Nip/Tuck, talks about playing a transsexual and being a Bond girl.

Did producers tell you from the outset your character was going to be transexual?

No. Two weeks before the end of filming is when I found out.

And your reaction?

Thank God I was sitting down. I was blown over. It was a little shocking. It was shocking to everybody on set and that’s the funny thing because these people you would think, after working on a set of a show for two years, would be used to just about anything. I remember the day the script came out and everybody was reading it. People’s jaws were dropping left and right. What? Ava’s a man?

How often do you pick up a script and think, “How the hell am I going to make this work”?

All the time, but this show is out there, pushes boundaries and deals with a lot of different subject matters. It’s not just about plastic surgery. A lot of lines are blurred in terms of people being good, bad or both. I was fascinated by it.
