DEAR VAL: I’ve been married for a long time and my marriage is happy and loving. We also have a good sex life. But I’m a crossdresser. My wife knows about this and is very understanding, often helping me with clothes and makeup. I only do this once a month at home and the rest of the time I’m all male. I’ve told my wife I’d like to go out occasionally dressed as a woman but she’s very unhappy about this, even if it’s away from our home area. She won’t agree to come with me either. I don’t know how to persuade her about this — or should I be satisfied with the way things are?

DEAR CROSSDRESSER: You’re very fortunate in being married to an understanding woman. Most women find they’re emotionally unable to be supportive of their husband’s cross-dressing. Usually crossdressers keep it a secret or find their marriage flounders over it when their partner finds out. Your wife obviously feels she can deal with the situation while it’s at home, but not outside in public. She’s probably afraid someone will recognize you.
