Lansing – Two days after Kalamazoo city voters approved an anti-discrimination ordinance to protect gays, lesbians and transgender individuals, a Washtenaw County Democrat introduced a House measure to overturn Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage.
State Rep. Pam Byrnes, current House speaker pro tem, said Kalamazoo’s vote to ban job, housing and public-accommodation discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity signals a “significant change” in public opinion on gay rights since Michigan voted in 2004 to adopt a traditional definition of marriage.
