iOTA’s rise from relatively underground singer-songwriter to musical theatre juggernaut has been swift and significant. Back in 2006, the multiple ARIA-nominated Sydneysider took a gutsy leap of faith and donned a parted-blonde-bouffant wig to play East German transsexual rock star Hedwig in John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His transcendent performance led to a role as the singing angel in Sydney Dance Company’s Berlin, followed by a turn as the sweet transvestite from Transylvania, Frank N Furter, in last year’s The Rocky Horror Show. It was a role he was evidently born to play – he took home a Helpmann Award and gave Tim Curry a run for his money.
