Equality California urges thorough investigation of gay navy sailor’s death

Equality California (EQCA) is urging the Naval Criminal Investigative Service to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of August Provost, a 29-year-old gay African-American Navy sailor who was shot to death inside the Camp Pendleton military base last week.

Various media reports say Provost, a Houston native, had complained to his family about base personnel harassing him. While investigators have said Provost’s death was a random act of violence unrelated to his sexual orientation, the incident raises questions about the hostile climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals created by the discriminatory federal policy of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ (DADT).
