Ambiguously gay hero of the skating world

Pop Star on Ice Hands-down the most impressive and wildly entertaining nonfiction film in this last weekend of the Frameline festival is David Barba & James Pellerito’s intimate and exhaustively documented look at the life and career of US figure-skating champion Johnny Weir. It’s a film that veers between the campy style of Party Monster, the autopsy-like deconstruction of its subject as in an Errol Morris doc, and the trolling-for-controversy engagement of HBO’s Real Sports.
