When upstart Cygnet Theatre raised the curtain in 2003 on a small strip mall theater near SDSU, its first show was “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” As a fitting bookend, it is also the last on the Rolando stage, as the company completes its move to the more spacious Old Town Theatre.
The dark musical comedy may not now have the same punch as when it premiered in 1998, or even when it first played at Cygnet, but the production directed by James Vasquez and led by Matthew Tyler in the titular role feels fresh, vibrant and appropriately raucous. The sound levels seem to have improved from the 2003 production – loud enough to feel like a rock show, but not so loud that you can’t understand the lyrics.
