Trans-form the debate

Being transgender is not about choice, it’s about identity.

As I stood in a queue at the local corner-shop, I heard a high-pitched voice beside me at knee height, “Boys, boys, girls, boys, girls, boys”. Looking down, I noticed a small boy looking at a string of babies’ dummies and labelling them “boys” and “girls” according to their colour.

I stood reminiscing. When I was this boy’s age, I refused to conform to Western society’s idea of “gender norms”. I couldn’t stand Barbies, hated wearing dresses (they were too impractical to play football in) and would feel queasy at the mention of the colour pink.
