Early voting begins today on a charter amendment that over the past year and a half has stirred up heated rhetoric among hundreds of political activists and raised thousands of dollars in campaign contributions.
Charter Amendment 1, if passed on the March 24 election, will make a Gainesville ordinance conform to the Florida Civil Rights Act, effectively eliminating the anti-discrimination protections Gainesville extends to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.
