Gray Matters: AARP flexes its muscle on Medicare, support for gays

Let’s have a round of applause for AARP.

The organization of 40 million Americans over age 50 displayed its lobbying power on behalf of the interests of older men and women when it helped goad Senate Republicans to do the right thing and pass the Medicare reform bill by a margin sufficient to withstand a presidential veto.

Now also comes another important reason to praise AARP: It will be sponsoring the fourth annual SAGE National Conference on Aging Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders, planned for Oct. 12-14 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. The conference theme: “It’s About Time – LGBT Aging in a Changing World.”
