“Arias with a Twist,” which just ended its run at Here Arts Center, starred ultimate gender illusionist Joey Arias and was directed by genius puppeteer Basil Twist — and proved the hippest, funkiest, most creative evening of theater in recent memory. Combining elements of punk, horror movies, deco musicals, Billie Holliday-inflected jazz, and haute couture, it was basically a metaphor for Arias’ strange, fantastic journey through show biz, from his early years in the LA and New York club scenes to his groundbreaking appearance on “Saturday Night Live” backing up David Bowie with his late soul mate Klaus Nomi, to his just-ended triumphant six year-run as the star of Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas.
