My father’s voice cracks with grief as he continues. “I thought I had to – like he used to say – whup the sissy out of you.”
His eyes are watery, and I feel hot tears rolling down my face too. I’m surprised by how sad I feel, for both of us. I never thought, before that moment, that I’d be able to forgive him for all the yelling, the anger, the bullying.
