Students to gender-bend at Loyola’s very own drag show
The annual Vagina Carnival, an event complete with its own drag show, will return to Loyola in February in support of the campus’ yearly production of The Vagina Monologues. Though Loyola’s drag show may only be entering its third year, the drag show tradition permeates Chicago’s local history and society at large.
Dressing and performing “in drag” can trace its roots as far back as ancient Rome, whose histories and art include examples of cross-dressing males, and Elizabethan England, when cultural norms banned women from the stage and required boys to don feminine clothing to fill in the roles.
