Craig Russell would have turned 60 this month. He died much too young, in 1990, of AIDS-related complications, but he lived long enough to establish himself as one of the best female impersonators of his or any other time.

No mere drag queen, Russell fully inhabited his characters: Bette Davis, Carol Channing, Judy Garland, Mae West, Tallulah Bankhead, Ethel Merman, Bette Midler and, most uncannily, Barbra Streisand.He dressed like these performers.
