Born anatomically male, in Samoa, as Merota Tasilimu, Mandela is one of a group transvestite boxers taking to the ring.
The Australian newspaper reported on its website that a total of 24 fafafine will fight each other in coming months in touranments in Australia and New Zealand.
Mandela, 25, lives in New Zealand and signed up for the fafafine boxing tournament after training at a gym in south Auckland.
