Theater review: ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ anything but a drag

The raucous, wildly entertaining “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” is the rare film-to-stage adaptation that might just top its source material.

Based on the 1994 Australian cult film, the musical opened its first U.S. tour this week at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. The movie’s writer/director Stephan Elliott co-wrote the stage version with Scottish screenwriter Allan Scott, and one can’t help but think Elliott used the opportunity to tighten up the weaker moments while keeping all the elements that made the original a hit.
