Advocates Demand Fair Count

A group of LGBT rights advocates and elected officials gathered on the steps of City Hall on March 18 to demand that the federal government honor 2010 census responses from gay and lesbian couples who identify themselves as married and their household members as a family.

“The fundamental point is that all people in this country deserve to be counted for who they are, as they are, and not to have their government decide how they will be counted, not have their government define who they are,” said Democratic City Councilman Bill de Blasio of Brooklyn. “It is fundamental that our national census respect each person’s choice about their identity.”
