An Evening With John Waters

John Waters makes no apologies for what he’s done to American cinema. “I’m fascinated by people who think they’re normal but are completely insane,” Waters says.

That fascination led Waters to create a string of cult films that explored the dark side of the American psyche. In his early films, “Pink Flamingos” (1972), “Female Trouble” (1974), “Desperate Living” (1977) and “Polyester” (1981), Waters’ characters, recruited from the streets of his hometown Baltimore, perform the most vile and disgusting acts known to man.

“I marvel at the freedom of bad taste,” Waters said by phone from Baltimore.

The director has no trouble getting material. He’s a magnet for eccentric and offbeat people who have no qualms about telling him anything.
