The American Psychological Association urged psychologists on Sunday to take a leading role in ending discrimination based on gender identity but stopped short of taking a position with respect to the diagnosis of gender identity disorder (GID) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual due to be published in 2012.
“Psychologists who work with clients with gender identity issues are not of one mind on this issue,” wrote the six-member APA Task Force on Gender Identity and Gender Variance in a report it delivered at the APA’s annual convention on Sunday. The task force noted that the psychiatric profession publishes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, which contains GID, “and thus revision is their responsibility.”
