Ae Fond Kiss hunk wanted transvestite role in new movie

BY day he’s a moral crusader, visiting schools and youth groups to encourage racial integration in his hometown.

But at night Atta Yaqub has been seen camping it up with Asian transvestites around the streets of Port Glasgow.

Having achieved fame for his controversial role in Ken Loach’s Ae Fond Kiss two years ago, Atta has yet to complete the transition from relative unknown to full-time actor.

But as far as the 27-year-old is concerned that means he’s got the best of both worlds – even if it does occasionally involve pretending to be a man who loves dressing up in women’s clothes.

“I originally went up for the part of Bobbi, the transvestite,” laughs Atta, who stars in new release Nina’s Heavenly Delights. “When the film was in its initial stages I went down to London to audition for it.
