Liberal Democrat and trans woman Jenny Bailey has been elected mayor of Cambridge, England, the first transgender mayor in history, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail Web site. Bailey, 45, underwent a male-to-female sex-change operation in her 30s. She met her partner, Jennifer Liddle, 49, also a trans woman, while the two were undergoing hormone replacement therapy. They served on the Cambridge city council together.

Bailey has two children, aged 20 and 18.

“So many more things define me than being transgender, a medical condition I had 15 years ago which I have now recovered from,” Bailey said in the article. “I’m proud that I managed to get through something which was quite difficult and managed to come out of it a better person…. I certainly do not want it to eclipse being mayor.” (The Advocate)
