The opening of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival last week was something of an exercise in highlighting the differences between men and women, both on screen and off.

The opening night short film, Mirror Mirror, told the story an elderly cross-dresser who sorrowfully yet determinedly packs up his woman troubles in his old kit-bag as he comes to the conclusion that ‘men age gracefully’ while for women – and maybe specifically drag queens – the aging process isn’t so gentle.
