Center for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people has a gym, cybercafe and art gallery and welcomes everyone.
Ferndale – When Affirmations broke ground on its new community center two years ago, officials expected visitor numbers would double by the end of its first year of operation.
Now it looks like that might happen in the next couple of months – and it’s been open only since April 9.
“We thought that if we built it they would come. But the response has been phenomenal. It makes us feel like we got it right,” said Leslie Ann Thompson, chief executive officer of Affirmations, the state’s largest community center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents.
Affirmations moved April 9 to a new 17,000-square-foot building on Nine Mile, about a half-block from its former location. The center has provided programs, services and activities for gays and lesbians for 18 years. The grand opening of the new facility will be June 3.
