County ordinance targets discrimination against gay, transgender people

A proposed Shelby County ordinance would block the county government from discriminating against gay, lesbian and transgendered employees. It would also place non-discrimination rules on contractors doing work with the county and private businesses in unincorporated areas.

“It helps to eliminate the fear of being terminated just based on sexual orientation or gender identity and expression,” said Daniel Forrest, a board member of the Tennessee Equality Project, an advocacy group for gays, lesbians and transgendered people that’s pushing for measures here and in Nashville.
