D.C. jails consider new rules for trans inmates

In what is believed to be a first for a U.S. prison system, the D.C. Department of Corrections has developed a draft policy that could allow male-to-female transgender inmates to be placed in prison housing previously restricted to biological females.

According to a description of the draft policy released by the D.C. Trans Coalition, the proposed policy would create a DOC committee that “would potentially have the power to place people according to gender identity” if the inmate requested such placement.
