Mayor Sheila Dixon, the first black woman to hold Baltimore’s top office, scored a decisive victory yesterday in the Democratic mayoral primary. Dixon, 53, has held the office since taking over from Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) in January.

With the count essentially complete at 11:32 p.m., the city’s Board of Elections said Dixon had received 50,585 votes. That amounted to about 63 percent of the 80,157 votes for all eight candidates.

Dixon ran more than 31,000 votes ahead of her nearest rival, City Council member Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. His 18,944 votes were a little less than one-quarter of those cast. Dixon is to face Republican Elbert R. Henderson on Nov. 6
