As audience members filed into the Rion Ballroom on Tuesday night, drag queen Miss Coco Peru sat backstage, fixing her hair and makeup in a full-length mirror and reflecting on how times have changed.

“Back when I was in college, there weren’t any gay groups,” she said before going on, adding she was pleased to perform for college students. “I really love the spirit of the students and the passion people have when they’re that young. I like being around that energy.”

Peru, also known as Clinton Leupp, performed her drag act at the Reitz Union to a crowd of about 40 as part of Pride Awareness Month, sponsored by Pride Student Union.
