Performance highlights hardships, joys of embracing transgender identity.

If destroying the binary is wrong, we don’t want to be right, proclaimed the Southern Gents, a dynamic transgender duo who headlined USC’s first transgender-awareness event Monday night at Ground Zero.

The coffeehouse was packed with members and allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, who fell into a hushed awe as the lights came down and the two performers came out – in every sense of the word.

Set against the backdrop of their personal coming-out stories, Scott Turner Schofield, friendly neighborhood performance artist, and Katz of the Athens Boys Choir relayed with a mix of humor and poignancy the struggle of being transgender in a binary world.

These two young men, born female in the South, make the rounds of college campuses, recounting through poetry and acting the challenges, joys and hardships of embracing the transgender identity.
