The Kobe Family Court’s Amagasaki branch has rejected a petition to change the officially registered gender of a 51-year-old man of Amagasaki who has been diagnosed with gender identity disorder (GID), it was learned Wednesday.
Because the man has fathered a child, the branch ruled he did not meet the criteria to change his gender as stipulated in a law that enables GID sufferers to alter their gender in official family registers.
The man, commonly known as Mami Osako, plans to soon appeal to the Osaka High Court.
Osako married in 1981 and fathered a child. He was diagnosed with GID shortly after he divorced his wife around 2001, and had a sex-change operation last year.
