Fired transgender professor speaking in Saginaw

A former Spring Arbor University professor who gained national attention by getting fired for switching from a male to a female plans to visit a Saginaw church Thursday.

Julie Nemecek, known as John for most of her life, is set to talk about the ordeal at 7 p.m. Thursday, at St. John Episcopal Church, 123 N. Michigan.

Nemecek came out as a transgendered cross-dresser — she is married to a woman, has had no gender-altering surgeries but wears women’s attire — and legally changed her name three days before college administrators fired her in February 2007 after 16 years of teaching there.
