Fisher:Stanford safeguards transgender students

MercuryNews.com – By Patty Fisher

Most students returning to Stanford this fall probably won’t notice, but the list of people protected against discrimination and harassment on campus just got longer.

After years of debate and months of discussion, Stanford has become one of California’s first private universities to add transgender students to the groups covered by its anti-discrimination policy.

That puts Stanford University on a par with all the Ivy League schools, which forbid discrimination based on “gender identity,” along with race, sex, religion, disability and sexual orientation, among other traits.

The change should mean that Stanford students who might not be comfortable with the bodies they were born with can feel a bit more comfortable being themselves while working hard to get their educations.
