Gay pride resolution stirs board debate

A resolution on gay pride month, which Tuolumne County supervisors were asked Tuesday to support, sparked a passionate half-hour discussion, including one supervisor’s candid talk regarding his own vow of celibacy.

The resolution ? proclaiming June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month in Tuolumne County ? failed on a 3-2 vote. Supervisors Paolo Maffei and Liz Bass voted in favor, while supervisors Mark Thornton, Teri Murrison and Dick Pland dissented.

Five people spoke in favor of the resolution. One of them was Jerry Cadotte, a gay man who lives in Jupiter with his partner.

“I’m certainly very disappointed,” Cadotte said after the meeting. “I think they missed an opportunity to provide leadership to show that Tuolumne County is an accepting community.”
