UMBC is conducting a program this coming school year that enables students of different genders to share an apartment in university-sanctioned housing.
The success of this year’s pilot program will determine the future of gender-neutral housing (GNH) at the university.
GNH has been interpreted in many different ways in 82 college campuses nationwide. At UMBC, according to one participant, GNH will protect the rights of queer – lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender – and gender non-conformative students. This group of students might not be comfortable or safe living with other members of their biological sex in a traditional university housing setting.
