Gender not a disorder, court told

A psychologist testified Wednesday that a person born anatomically one gender who wants to be the other does not suffer from a disorder but rather has a “biologic condition.”

Daniel Claiborn, testifying for the state, said he has treated transgender people who are mentally stable and others who are ill but he didn’t think it was traceable to their transgender nature.

Claiborn, of Kansas City, compared the transgender person to a “flat-chested” woman, dwarf, minority or child with a birth defect. Any of them may suffer from mental illness but they are not inherently mentally ill, he said.
