Erica Solis doesn’t remember the Placemat Explanation, but her parents have told the story so often she can recite it herself: She was 4 and sitting at the kitchen table.
“If men are there,” her mother said, pointing to the left side of a placemat, “and women are over there,” indicating the right margin, “then Mama is right about here.” And she gestured to a spot close to the “male” side of the mat.
