Gigi’s Showbar in Detroit

This past weekend, my lovely lady Lynne and I were in Detroit to visit one of Lynne’s High School Friends. Saturday afternoon, we started talking about things that we should do while in Detroit. After a quick browse of resources on the Internet, we found links to Gigi’s Showbar, a staple of the Drag/Female Impersonator world.

We didn’t think twice, but immediately made reservations. Boy are we glad that we did.

To start off with. Gigi’s is very centrally located in Detroit. There is ample off street parking and they provide a valet service in a fenced in lot. The staff is incredibly friendly and courteous. The first floor (or upstairs) is the main bar and dance area. It’s well lit and nicely laid out. The real fun begins if you spend $2 extra dollars for entrance to the Show Bar which is downstairs.

The stage show is very professionally done and the MC on the night we were in was Nikki Stevens. Nikki has a real flair on stage, but there is a real surprise for you if you walk to the back of the Show Bar. Nikki’s mother (who insisted that we call her mom) runs a jewelry stand in the back featuring custom pieces that Nikki and her mother have created.

The downstairs crowd was a nice mix of admirers, bridal parties and others. No one group dominates the bar at Gigi’s. It’s exactly the type of environment that we here at at URNA value. Highly inclusive of all groups, open minded and accepting.

After an incredible stage show, we wandered back upstairs for a drink before leaving. The upstairs is even more diverse. From weekend crossdressers, full time transvestites, working girls, gay men, straight girls. It truly is a welcoming place. Best of all, there had to be over 100 people there. I’m guessing conservatively at least 200 people went to Gigi’s this last Saturday.

I can definitely see us making trips to Detroit more often in the near future, and Gigi’s will always be one of our destinations. If you are nearby or just passing through and haven’t checked out Gigi’s, then get your butt over there. You are missing a great time!
