Graceful show taps range of emotions

Antony Hegarty sang in near darkness as he and his six-piece chamber group opened their Wexner Center series concert in the Southern Theatre last night. As the 90-minute set continued, the light over his straight, blackened hair increased, illuminating him haphazardly before becoming brighter by mid-set.

It seemed to speak for the delicacy of his music and the singer’s shy, vibrating delivery, high and childlike, yet carrying a deep wisdom and considerable pain.

More likely, though, it represented the theme of emergence that pervades Antony’s music. His transgender identity embraces female themes of birth and nurturing. He seems caught on the dictum in Bob Dylan’s line, “He not busy being born is busy dying.”
