I’ve had a shot at immortality

April 29, 2012, marked my 21st birthday. On April 31, I caught a flight from my hometown of Guwahati and landed in Mumbai at 4.35 in the evening. I hadn’t told my parents what I intended to do; had I asked them for permission, they would have certainly refused. I was to have been admitted to a hospital on the same day that I came to the city, perhaps my procedure – a sex reassignment surgery – would also have been done. Today, I would have been sitting in front of you as a woman.
