Izzard slams Tavoltas Trasvestite performance

British funnyman EDDIE IZZARD has blasted JOHN TRAVOLTA’s portrayal of a transvestite in cult comedy HAIRSPRAY as cliched – before the actor has even begun filming his role. Travolta has signed up to bend genders as the colourful EDNA TURNBLAD in the forthcoming big screen remake of the film and Broadway musical, but cross-dressing comedian Izzard is unimpressed by the casting. He says, “He’ll (Travolta) just be throwing on a dress. He won’t be saying he’s a transvestite. “The most dangerous thing to do as a transvestite is to go out in the street wearing a dress… and buy a Mars Bar. That’s the most radical thing.” The Hairspray remake is due for release next year (07) and also stars MICHELLE PFEIFFER, QUEEN LATIFAH and BILLY CRYSTAL.
