The campaign to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” may have a new spokesperson: Elaine Donnelly. Donnelly, president of a conservative group known as the Center for Military Readiness, testified on Capitol Hill July 23 in support of banning gay soldiers from serving openly in the military.
By all accounts, her testimony sabotaged her own cause, and helped reveal the irrationality of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and its supporters. Lawmakers from both parties called Donnelly’s statements “just bonkers,” “dumb” and “scurrilous,” and said they were “shocked,” “embarrassed” and “insulted” by her words.
