Making a pointe: Comical cross-dressers prove ballet, drag can have wide appeal

A lot has changed since the men of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo first put on tutus and pointe shoes to give classical dance a gender-bending makeover.

Back in 1974, they performed to amuse a handful of friends in New York lofts way off Broadway. The troupe was part of the subversive underground in the days before “gay liberation” mellowed into “gay pride.”

In 2008, the Trocks are a critically acclaimed, back-by-popular-demand staple at major venues around the world, including the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts them next weekend.
