Jackson, Miss. — The federal trial for Jackson Mayor Frank Melton and his former bodyguard is scheduled to begin with jury selection on Monday. The mayor and Michael Recio were indicted last year on civil rights charges surrounding the destruction of a house on Ridgeway Street in 2006.

Melton’s defense attorney wants to use a 2006 internal affairs investigation against Wright, who was indicted along with Melton and Recio, but pleaded guilty in October to a misdemeanor conspiracy charge in connection with the case. The Jackson Police Department’s Internal Affairs Department investigated allegations that Wright had a sexual relationship with two transsexual prostitutes. Defense attorneys said prosecutors threatened to make the investigation public to convince Wright to testify against his co-defendants.
