Must We Fight Over Labels?

RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo is great reality television. In the reunion show, one contestant, Ongina, identified as a gender fuck (the last word being bleeped out). Ongina caught some flak from some of the judges for looking like a boy at times and, in the last contest, for wearing slacks and not tucking. Ongina and another contestant, Nina Flowers, challenged some people’s concepts of drag and drag queens.

The transgender community constantly struggles over what terms are appropriate, correct, or acceptable. And not everyone whom most people consider transgender likes that term. I can be labeled transgender, transsexual, gender queer, gender fuck, androgyne, non-op transsexual, woman, woman born male, woman with a transsexual history, woman with transsexual experience, queer, pre-op transsexual, gender variant, and more.
