?I thought I was a woman until kindergarten or first grade,? Loren A. Lemmond, a senior psychology major, said.
Lemmond is transgender, and at a very young age he realized that the body he was born with did not match the gender he most identified with: male.
According to statistics compiled by the American Psychiatric Association, one in 30,000 men and one in 100,000 women undergo sex-change surgery at some point in their lives.
However, the numbers are contested by transgender advocates who regard the decades-old estimate as conservative.
