No longer at the center of Seattles gay scene, bar still serving outsiders

At the Double Header tavern this week, men with stories to tell were drinking at the bar before noon.

But there were only a couple of reminders of the old Pioneer Square bar’s own story — a montage of black and white photos near the front door of drag queens.

On another wall, along with old Rainier beer signs, there’s a black and white photo of the oompah band that used to draw crowds of gay men and lesbians to polka on Friday and Saturday nights in the ’70s.

It was unusual at the time for gays and lesbians to go to the same bar, said Joseph Bellotti Jr., who took the bar over from his father, Joseph Bellotti Sr., 40 years ago.
