Drag queens made me nervous when I was an adolescent and navigating the quicksand of my awakening sexuality.

I was convinced they were the worst possible ambassadors for my struggle to emerge as a proud gay man. I was having enough difficulty carving out a convincingly masculine profile when the straight world only wanted to view me as another sissy; so why provide the world with the final conclusive evidence by wearing lipstick, eyeliner and a wig?
