Minorities relegated to fringes of gay world take centre stage at film fest, writes Robert McKay

The first is XXY, a film by director Lucía Puenzo, chosen to represent Argentina at last year’s Oscars, in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

It’s the story of Suli, played by Valeria Bertuccelli, a troubled teenager who is suspended from school when she punches her best friend in the nose. When an old family friend who just happened to be a plastic surgeon arrives with his wife and teenage son Alvaro in tow, ostensibly for a social call, the source of the girl’s suffering is revealed. Suli, it transpires was born intersex, exhibiting the sexual characteristics of both male and female.
