If being openly gay damages his career, then so be it, says Sydney actor Daniel Scott.

The 30-year-old star of the Priscilla Queen of the Desert stage musical “came out” at the age of 13.

“All I am interested in is using the small voice I have at the moment, if people want to listen, then I am going to say what I think,” says Scott.

“I think it has become a time where it really shouldn’t matter. If it screws up my career, then so be it. My life is much more important than my career.”

Scott says he feels a sense of responsibility to provide a role model for young gay men and women, adding that a large number of teenage suicides were related to confused kids coming to terms with their sexuality.

“When I was growing up, there was no-one, no-one to relate to, who was just being themselves,” he said.

“What I am interested in being is just that guy that some 10-year-old or 12-year old kid, who is wondering why he is feeling differently to everyone else at school … if I can alleviate some of that, I would be a fool not to take up some of that opportunity when I had it.”
