A Singaporean legal scholar who was scheduled to teach classes at the NYU School of Law this fall has withdrawn from the invitation following campuswide controversy over her apparent opposition of some gay rights.

Professor Thio Li-ann, a faculty member at the National University of Singapore and former member of Singapore’s Parliament, attracted widespread attention in 2007 after she gave a speech to Parliament opposing the repeal of Section 377A in the country’s penal code, which criminalizes sexual relations between men.
